Shearing and Slitting

Due to the fact that perforating and roller leveling, if applicable, slightly displace and stretch material, either shearing (sheet) or slitting (coil) may be required in order to meet specified length (sheet) and width (sheet and coil) tolerances. In the event that raw material is within the desired width and length tolerance and perforating and/or roller leveling do not cause the material to exceed required dimensions, then it is possible for shearing and/or slitting to be avoided.

To avoid shearing and/or slitting, tolerances need to be liberal enough so they can be held off the press. Therefore, with regard to width tolerances, the raw material vendor’s tolerance should be specified as the minimum. Vendor width tolerances for carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminum are provided below.

Carbon Steel
Material Thickness Sheet and Coil Width Tolerances
48" and Under Over 48" thru 60"
30GA - 7GA -0+3/16" -0+1/4"
Stainless Steel
Material Thickness Sheet and Coil Width Tolerances
48" and Under Over 48" thru 60"
Under 0.131" -0+1/16" -0+1/8"
0.131" and Over -0+1/4" -0+1/4"
Aluminum
Material Thickness Sheet and Coil Width Tolerances
48" and Under Over 48" thru 60"
0.006" - 0.125" +/-3/64" +/-1/16"
0.126" - 0.186" +/-1/16" +/-3/32"
0.187" - 0.249" +/-3/32" +/-1/8"

Length tolerances held off the press are dependent on the type and thickness of the material and the pattern being perforated. To find out how liberal length tolerances need to be in order to avoid re-shearing, contact one of our Customer Service Representatives with that information.

If sheared or slit after perforating, the following tolerances are held.

Material Thickness Diamond Standard Diamond Superior
30GA to 10GA +/- 1/16" +/- 1/32"
8Ga to 1/4" +/- 1/8" +/- 1/16"

REMINDER: Unless Diamond Superior is specified, Diamond Standard tolerances are supplied.
NOTE: For shear burr tolerance information, reference the “Burr” portion of this section.
